Unmercenary Sacred MusicSet Me as A Seal—Music for Matrimony |
Set me as a seal on your heart,
as a seal on your arm;
For stern as death is love,
relentless as the nether world is devotion;
its flames are a blazing fire.1
The piece was written for the Crowning of Gina Buchanan and Sloan Rolando and performed by them and Michelle (Buchanan) Buell at their wedding. Thus, this was the grooms gift to his new wife. It is based on a series of biblical texts that serve as a guide for those who seek to serve God in the vocation of marriage. The refrain is from the Song of Solomon, verse 8:6. The remaining verses are taken from Song 2:2-3, Prov 31:10a, 12, Prov 3:3a, 4, 1 John 4:16, and a closing Trinitarian doxology. The piece is set as a trio for Soprano, Alto, and Tenor.
